I am a 48 year old man whose musical tastes cover just about everything, and to put it simply, this is one of the finest albums I have heard in a long , long time. Four quality musicians, Brendan Benson's wonderful voice, great harmonies and, most important to me, no two songs sound anything alike. The lyrics really tell great stories and the pace of the album is excellent. Sit back and enjoy.
We've listened to it all the way through about 50 times. Great lyrics and mixing of styles.
Actually, my husband is the one who bought this, but I thought I'd mention how much he loves this album. We are both fans of the White Stripes, so he thought he'd like this CD with Jack White. This music is very different from the White Stripes, but the CD has become one of my husband's favorites. If he can tell me why in a more articulate way than I can state it, I'll add it to my review later.
The second half of the record has too much filler, and after the killer first half the weak tracks stand out like a shredded guitar string. The one problem I have with it, however, is the length.
Raconteurs, the Stripes, the Dead Winter, even his Loretta Lynn album.they all have the signature choppy no frills riffing that is unmistakable. Any project that Jack White attaches himself to has the same bluesy, dirty rawk feel.magic in a bottle that can't be copied.
Tracks like 'Salute Your Solution' or 'Old Enough' blast out of your car speakers just like the best summertime anthems do. This Raconteurs album is no exception.
With the Raconteurs, the workload is spread over more people than 2, so White gets a chance to stretch out a bit and delve more into songs. There are 14 tracks here, about 4 of which are sub-par and dont stand up well against the rest of the material.
If they had just taken a scissors to the thing before release, it would have been a tight, 10 track classic (see Broken Boy Soldiers), but with the extra padding its just good.
A fantastic record by The Raconteurs. Well written, well recorded, well worth the purchase. Even if you aren't a Raconteurs fan, this is a good rock record to keep you in the loop on new music.
